  18. If I may tap your experience a little deeper on the subject of C++ functions
  19. that return references — how does this affect the implementation of classes
  20. which overload the subscripting operator ([]), like arrays, vectors, and
  21. matices?  It was my understanding that the ability to return references was
  22. included in C++ largely to address this specific need.
